Guadalupe Gonzalez Orozco is my name. I was born in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. My date of birth is on December 2, 1961 and I am the son of Atanacio Gonzalez Gomez and Esperanza Orozco Vazquez, both from the state of Jalisco in Mexico. I am a descendent of a family with Mariachi roots which date to the final years of the past century- the late 1800’s. Furthermore, my father as well as my grandfather both played musical instruments, specifically the harp. This occurred over by the region of “La Sierra del Tigre.”
My encounter with music, as well as sounds of Mariachi strings began since I was quite young. I was a mere six years old when I began to play the trumpet, which continues to be my instrument of expertise. Mariachi music is part of my family history and of my life.
In addition, I have the privilege of being part of the world renowned Mariachi group, “ Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez.” I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Jose Hernandez in San Jose, California right after their performance of “Poeta Campesino” They played it in such a majestic manner that they left me in awe. A few months passed when I received a call from Mr.Hernandez and was asked to participate in his prestigious Mariachi group.
Thirteen years have passed, yet my motivation is intense and my goal is to continue with this strong-willed, high caliber director Jose and his avant-garde music with continuous new propositions for the Mariachi group. Although, I have received invitations to perform with the world famous “Mariachi Vargas…” a true honor, my loyalty, my heart is with “Mariachi Sol de Mexico.” Furthermore, I am fortunate to also be able to share my expertise and experiences with my students of the Sweetwater Union High School District, where I have been employed, as a Mariachi instructor, since the year 2000. Coincidentally, the year 2000 happens to be the same year I became part of Mariachi “Sol de Mexico” where my career has expanded, as a professional Mariachi musician.
